The expression "Excuse me" isused in the United States than in China. An American says "Excuse me" when he wants to passsomeone, to leave a party or a dinner or when he finds himself late for an appointment. "Thank you" means to appreciatesomeone has done for you. An American says "Thank you" all day long. For example, he will say "Thank you" to the cashier when he had paidhis food. He will say "Thank you" to a student if he has just answered the question. At home the husband will thank hisif she brings him a cup of tea. On the other hand, the wife thanks her husband for helping her with her housework. So the American people's idea ofpolite is quite different from ours.

Scientist said that students usually need eight to ten hours' sleep per night. But most Chinese students do not get1sleep. Some Chinese parents are usually2to see their children studying late. They will think their children work very3But not all parents are happy about this. Once a mother told us that every4her 10-year-old boy put up one finger with his5still closed, begging(恳求) for one more minute for sleep. Like thousands of young "early birds" in China, he has to get up around six every morning.

A report shows that without a good night's sleep, students will be weaker(虚弱的) than they should be. Too much6is not the only reason why students stay up (熬夜) late. Some students always watch TV or play computer games late into the night. Scientist said students should develop good study habits.

    People who do not eat any meat are known as vegetarians(素食者) and they have different kof reasons(理由) for choosing meatless food. Some do it for religious(宗教的) or hreasons while others do it not by choice but by necessity. Meat is expensive and they cbuy it. Some famous people in history too were vegetarians and they had their own strange rfor not eating meat.

When he travelled, he would carry personal menus to be given to the waiters of hotels. He always got hmeals prepared exactly the way he wanted.

A teenage girl couldn't stand(忍受) her parents' discipline(管教)，so she left home. She wanted to be famous. But a few years later she had to beg on the street to live.

Now her father has died. Her mother was an old woman. But the mother still looked for the daughter. She went to every corner of the city. Everywhere she went, she posted a big picture of herself. At the bottom of the picture, she wrote, "I still love you, please come back home!"

When she got home，it was early morning. She knocked on the door. The door opened itself! She rushed to her mother's bedroom. Her mother was sleeping. She woke her mother, "It's me! Your daughter is back home!"

The mother and daughter held each other, full of happy tears. The daughter asked, "Why is the door not locked(锁)? A thief could get in.”

The mother answered softly, "The door has never been locked since you left.”
