Food is life, it gives us the nourishment(营养) we need to stay alive and be healthy. Usually, we eat because we are hor need energy. Brian Wansink, a professor at the University of Illinois, says we also eat certain foods because they make us fgood, and remind us of happy memories. Wansink calls this kof food comfort food. For some people, ice cream is a comfort food. For others, a bowl of no oodles makes them feel good.

    How does a food became comfort food? Professor Wansink believes that we connect food with important times, feelings, and people in our lives. “When I was a child, my mother made a delicious soup, I loved it. Now, I often eat this sonp when I am tired or worried, and it helps me feel better ,”says one of Wansink's friends.

Do men and women choose different comfort foods? Wansink's research(研究) says “yes" In his study, the favourite comfort food for bmen and women was ice cream. After this, men usually preferred hot, delicious food lsoup or noodles. Women liked sweet things such as chocolate and candies. Men and women like to eat comfort foods when they are happy, bwomen eat these foods more when they are sad or worried.

    In Canada and the United States, people enjoy entertaining(招待) guests at home. They often1 friends for a meal, a party, or just for coffee. People often send their invitations by saying, "Would you like to 2 for dinner this Saturday night?" or "Hey，we're having a party on Friday. Could you 3 us?"

    To reply to an invitation, either say thank you and accept(接受), or say you're sorry and give an 4. For example, "Thanks, I'd love to. What time would you like me to come?" or "Oh, sorry. I've booked tickets for a movie."

    Sometimes, however, people use expressions that sound like invitations but they are not real ones. For example, "Why not get together for a party 5?" They are just a polite way of ending a conversation. They are not real invitations because they don't have a specific(确定的) time or date. They just show that the person is trying to be 6.

    To reply to expressions like these, people just say "Sure, that would be great!" or "Yes, thanks." So next time when you hear something like an invitation, listen carefully to make sure if it is a real invitation or the person is just being kind.
