Eric didn't know he was going to help a blue whale today. As soon as he finished his homework, Eric jumped onto his bicycle and rode off in the direction of the beach. While he was riding along, he thought about the blue whales. He hoped he would see them again today.

    After he got to the beach, Eric hid his bicycle behind a bush (灌木丛) so that no one could see it from the road. Then he ran down onto the sand. The sky was growing dark. Eric frowned (皱眉). If it rained, he wouldn't be able to see the blue whales because they would stay in deeper water. He hurried along the beach to the rocks. They were the best place to watch me blue whales because of their height. Before Eric reached the rocks, he felt a drop of water on his head. "Oh, no! Now the blue whales will stay in the deep water and l won't be able to watch them!"

    But just then he saw a large shape on the beach. It was a young blue whale! The whale had come too close to the shore and got stuck (被困) on the beach! At first the blue whale didn't move at all and Eric thought it was dead. Then he saw its tail move weakly. Eric turned and ran through the rain as fast as he could back to his bicycle. He had to get help to get the blue whale back in the water soon, or it would die and Eric couldn't let that happen…

    Tigers are among the most admired and most feared animals in the world. When we think of a tiger, we think of danger. We think of the big teeth and large feet of it. We also think of beauty.

    The tiger is a hunter that hunts alone. In fact, tigers are probably better than any other land mammal (哺乳动物) at catching large animals without help. Even so, the life of this big-game hunter isn't easy. Finding food can be difficult, especially for a tiger that is old or weak. Most of the animals it tries to attack get away. A tiger sometimes goes weeks without eating. When that happens, it may hunt animals that can be dangerous even for a tiger.

    When they are in a bad situation, some tigers may even attack humans. But in fact, tigers kill very few people each year. Most tigers run away when they see people.

    What tigers have done to people can't compare to what people have done to tigers. Over the last 200 years, we have almost killed tigers in the wild.  Today, the tiger is one of the most endangered animals on Earth.

    A tiger may live for 20 years or more, if it is not disturbed by humans. Female (雌性的) tigers usually live longer than male tigers, because the males live more dangerously.

    It isn't easy for people to tell a male from a female unless the female happens to be with her babies. Only females take care of the young. The big difference between males and females is size. Male tigers are much bigger.

    Tigers are big eaters. In a single year, one tiger can eat about 70 deer or other large animals. That is one reason why tigers hunt alone. If they lived in big groups, they could never find enough animals to feed them all.

    Poor Les had a dream of being a DJ. He went to a radio station every day for a week, 1  a job. Finally the station manager offered one to him, but with no pay! Les said thanks and 2 it. He was asked to get coffee and pick up lunches and dinners for the workers at the station. However, when possible, Les would go to the studio (演播室) and learn whatever he could. Back in his room at night, he 3 and prepared for an opportunity (机会).

    One Saturday afternoon, one DJ named Rock drank too much and he seemed to have trouble with his 4. Suddenly, the phone rang. Les picked it up. He was the 5 person at the station. It was the station manager.

    The manager knew Rock couldn't 6 his programme, so he asked Les to call one of the other DJs to come to help. Les said yes, but he waited about 15 minutes before he called the 7 that he found nobody. He was sure his opportunity was on its way.

    The manager asked, "Young man, do you know how to work in the 8?"

    "Yes, Sir," replied Les.

    Les quickly walked into the studio, moved Rock aside and sat down at the desk. He was 9. He turned on the microphone and said, "Look out! This is me—Les Brown. There were none before me and there will be none after me…"

    Les gave the listeners and his manager a big 10! He went on to have a successful life in politics, public speaking and television!
