If you can speak more than one language
well, then you are probably called "big headed" by your friends. According
to a study, learning another language causes an increase (增长) in the size of your brain.
Scientists have known that learning another
language changes the way you think for a long time. But now, with a special
machine, they find that it also
changes the fabric (结构) of the brain.
A study at the Swedish Armed Forces Interpreter
Academy showed that learning another language caused the important parts of the
brain to grow larger. At the school, language learners who were good at
learning new languages went through the strictest language training program in
the world. They learned many different languages in just thirteen months. The
young students took in a large number of new words all day long, including
weekends and holidays, to prepare them for very special duties (任务). The results showed that some areas of the brain in the language
learners grew clearly in size.
It was the learning of foreign languages
instead of other skills that caused the change. The students with the greatest
growth in the key brain areas had better skills of languages than the other
students in the course.
Other recent studies showed that students
with good foreign language skills did better in exams than those with poor
language skills. For adults with good foreign language skills, the problem of
losing memory came much later. "Brain growth" is something that, at
the very least, seems like a good development.
