"World Car Free Day (世界无车日)" was first
by over 30 cities in France on September 22,1998. It was
set up to protect the environment. So far, more than 1,000 cities in the world
have had a "World Car Free Day".
The first
"World Car Free Day" in China was in Chengdu in 2001. Other cities,
Taipei, Shanghai and Wuhan also support the day.
The
"World Car Free Day" campaign asks drivers to leave their
at home one day each month and walk to work. It also calls
on people not to use cars on June 5, which is World Environment Day. The slogan
for the day is, "If we don't drive for one day, we can have one more day
of skies."
