Clothing is a language. It tells us about individuals: their personality, age, place in society and so on. If we want to know more about society,we can look at traditional clothing.

The continent of Africa has a long history and a rich culture, and this is shown in traditional dress. You often find three colors-red,gold and green in the clothing. The first color stands for the blood of millions of people who suffered as slaves(奴隶). The second is for the rich resources of the African earth, and the third represents the grasslands of home.

The patterns on the clothing also have a meaning. A common pattern is in the form of a cross "×",which stands for "unity". Another pattern is a rectangular(矩形)box, which represents "strength".

Because clothing has a strong social meaning, people are very careful in choosing what to wear. It would be a serious mistake to wear the wrong clothing,or to wear clothes in the wrong way. For instance,in Ghana,a woman should wear her waistband differently according to the importance of the social event.

Traditional dress also tells us about everyday life. African designs are famous for loose(宽松的)clothing. The climate, with the hot sun and wide temperature ranges(变化), requires that the clothes should be comfortable for daily life.

Although many people wear Western clothes, particularly in the big cities in Africa, traditional dress is very highly valued(评价). This is because it has deep cultural meanings.

What is the passage mainly about?
Clothing tells us everything except their _______.
According to the passage, red _______.
The color that stands for wealth is _______.
Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

It seems that school children all over the world complain (抱怨) about their school food. What do students of your age eat for lunch at school in other countries?

        Japan

High schools have dining rooms. They serve everything from noodles to rice, but not burgers or chips. Other children bring food from home, such as cold rice balls, meat or fish, pickles(泡菜)and vegetables. Twice a year parents are invited to have a taste of the food.

        The United States

A typical menu from an American school is made up of a hamburger with fried potatoes or roast chicken, lettuce and pickles, fruit and cookies. School lunches must also provide at least one third of the daily amount(总量)of necessary nutrition(营养), such as vitamin A, vitamin C and calcium (钙).

        Australia

Meat pies , sausage rolls (香肠卷) and hot dogs are all traditional dishes in Australian school shops. But as the country pays more attention to children's health, healthier foods have started to appear on school menus. Many schools have used a traffic light system. The sale of red labeled (标注)foods, including cookies, chocolate and soft drinks, is served only twice a week. Healthier green labeled foods such as sushi, sandwiches, corn and watermelons, however, are available every day.

        South Africa

Most of South African schools do not serve meals at all. Classes end at 1:30 p. m. and students get their own lunches. Many students bring food from home, usually sandwiches.

Fast food and fried food sell the best among students. As a result, it has caused a rise in obesity (肥胖)among children. But as more people begin to realize that being too fat may cause different kinds of serious illnesses, some schools in towns have led the way towards better nutrition. Now students at these schools are offered lunches of porridge with vegetables, such as cabbage, onions, beans, carrots and tomatoes.

High schools in Japan serve ____________.
From the passage, we know the typical menu from an American school is ____________.
Which are traditional dishes in Australia?
    In South Africa ____________.
Which of the following is NOT true?
