An earthquake is one of the most common natural disasters(灾害), which happen
unexpectedly. It can sometimes be a really scary thing. Let's take a look at
all we need to know about it.
More than a million earthquakes happen on the earth every year. Surprisingly, they
normally die away in less than a minute, but can surely cause great damage.
The earth's surface is made up of many pieces(板块). They are always
moving about and pushing into each other. This is a very slow process, but they
do like to bump(碰撞) into each other a bit. When they are
moving around, sometimes they get pressed. When this happens, rocks
come into being around the edges(边缘). When the force is big enough, the crust(地壳) of the earth breaks
and the large energy moves through the earth. I's almost like waves, but a lot
bigger. That's exactly what an earthquake is.
However,
you probably have never experienced the kind of strong earthquake that will
cause serious injury(损伤). This is why you must learn to protect yourself after the first
shake.
Do you know how to protect yourself during an earthquake?
Here are some ways. Drop onto your hands and knees. Hide yourself under a strong table or to an inside wall (away
from windows). Remember to cover your head and neck with one arm and hand when
you move. Then leave the building quickly when there is no danger.
