Culture shock is
described as the feelings one experiences after leaving the home culture to
live in another cultural environment. It is not strange to any international
student. Here are stages (时期) of
culture shock that one may go through.
Stage 1
This is a fun time. Everything
is great, exciting and new. You love the differences: meeting new people, tasting
new food and doing new things. This stage can last several days, weeks, or
months.
Stage 2
Later, you notice more
differences, but not in a good way. You have had enough of the food; life here
is too fast/ slow; they celebrate the wrong holidays…
During this stage, you often feel worried, nervous, angry and sad.
Stage 3
You dislike everything
around you, including the culture, the language, and the food. You start to
refuse to accept them. You wonder why you made the decision to change at that
time. Don't worry. This is completely normal- it means you're adjusting(调整).
Stage4
Finally, you begin to
feel like yourself again. You don't refuse the differences and start to do the
opposite. You feel like you can begin to live with them. You no longer feel
alone and instead you look at the world around you carefully.
Stage 5
You are yourself
again! You enjoy the new culture and see everything in a new light. Things start
to become enjoyable. You feel comfortable, and are able to make decisions
according to your own likes and values. You start to feel at home.
