Follow that trash(垃圾)

    People don't like to talk about trash. Trash is smelly, dirty, ugly, broken, use less stuff. That's wwe throw it out. But everyone knows that trash affects our environment. It can pollute our land, water and air. So it's important to recycle our trash as much as possible.

    Some Americans were very interested in recycling and they were curious(好奇的)about what rhappened to their trash. So, what did they do？They became dand decided to "Follow that trash!"

    They took some items out of their recycling bin and put etags(标签)on them. Signals would be sto a computer by tags so the people could follow their trash on its journey. They found that some trash only travelling a few kilometers but some trash travelled hundreds of kilometers. Some trash was recycled, b much of it went into landfills.

    Waste management companies in America think this detective work will be helpful to them. Getting rid of waste is very expensive and this "trash tracking" will help them to become more efficient. It will save them time and money.

    However, the trash detectives say it's aimportant to reduce the amount of trash we produce. After all, if we produce less waste, we won't have to worry about where it goes.

    Why do you think people who live in some hot countries eat very spicy(辛辣的)food？Is it because the spices(调味品)make the food taste better？Is it just because their parents and grandparents and great-grandparents liked hot food, or is there somebetween spices and healthy food？

    Researchers from Cornell University think that it is because spice plants have some important chemicals. These chemicals can kill bacteria which spoil food.

    "Most common spices can kill 75 to 100of the bacteria in food, "explains one of the scientists. The bacteria grow moreand spoil food more quickly at higher temperatures. For this reason, it is more difficult to keep food from spoiling in hot climates.

    Do you like your food spicy？You answer probably tells something about the country you come from. If you like spicy food, it is possible that hundreds of years ago, when there were no fridge, people in your country started using spices to keep the food from spoiling. The traditional spicy dishes helped those people to live, healthier lives. Today, in a time of fridges, the spices just make the food taste good.

    Captain Joseph Mackey's airplane was flying over the ocean on its way to Great Britain when engine trouble started. He turned back and made a crash-landing at night in the deep snow of Newfoundland, All the men in the plane were killed except Captain Mackey who was badly hurt.

    Captain Mackey waited all the next morning for an airplane to comehim. In the afternoon he set out to find help. He went about a mile but found that he was too weak to go on through the snow. Half walking and half, he made his way back to the plane.

    The second day many planes passed above him, but none of the pilots saw him. In his plane was a flask(长颈瓶)of aluminum(铝)powder. He poured this on a huge stone to make the stone shine, but the wind blew it off.

    The third day Captain Mackey heard a plane coming nearer, flying very low. It flew right over him and passed on. Then he gave up hope of being found. In a few minutes the plane returned, and the pilot dipped(稍微降低) one wing to get aview. He had seen the aluminum powder blown by the wind on the snow.

    The pilot came for a better look, and then he saw Captain Mackey his arms. Jim Allison, the pilot, was an old friend. Allison quickly climbed higher and sent a radio message. In a short time a plane came and dropped a sleeping bag, food, medicine and tools for Captain Mackey. Later two men arrived with a sled to rescue him.
