Man has a big brain. He can think and s languages. Scientists once thought that man isn't the same as animals, b, man can think and learn. They know now that dogs，monkeys and birds can learn, too.

They are beginning to u that men are different from animals because they can speak. Animals can't speak. They make much n when they are afraid, or unhappy. Apes (猿) can learn some things more quickly than man. One or two of them have learned a few words. But they cannot join words to make S . They cannot think or l because they have no language. Language is a wonderful thing. Man has been a to build a modern world because he has language. Every child can speak his own language very w when he is four or five, b no animals learn to speak.

    How do children learn it? Scientists don't really know w happens inside our body when we speak. They only know that man can speak because he has a brain.

    A few days ago, I ran into (撞上) a stranger as he passed by. I said sorry to him, and he said, "Excuse me too, l wasn't even watching for you." We were very polite, this stranger and I. Then we went on our way after saying goodbye.

    Later in the kitchen at home, as I cooked our meal, my daughter Betty walked up to me, very quietly. When I turned around, I nearly knocked her down. "Get out of the way!" I shouted angrily. She ran away，crying.

    That night, when I lay in bed, my husband said to me, "You were so rude to Betty. Go and look around on the kitchen floor, and you'll find some flowers there. Betty brought those for you. She picked them herself. When I heard this, I thought deeply: While meeting with a stranger, I was calm and polite, but with my daughter, I was not patient. I felt sad and tears began to fall.

    "I still love you anyway." I kissed her and said, "I love you too and I do love the flowers. "I quietly went to Betty's bed, "Wake up, my dear," I said," Are these the flowers you picked for me? "She smiled," I found them by the tree. I knew you'd like them, especially the blue." I said," I am so sorry that I treated (对待) you that way today." And she whispered (悄声说), "Mommy, that's okay."

That day Betty gave me a lesson on how to get along with each other in the family. I spent much time on work before and didn't realize how important family life was. I decided to do better in the future.

    Lofton is a little village in England. It is not f from the city of Manchester. Not many families l around the village, so the people all know each o . Most of them are friendly and helpful.

    Though their homes are in Lofton, many people have jobs in Manchester. S work in large factories there. A few work in shops o offices. Most of these people go to work by train. It usually t about half an hour to go from Lofton to Manchester.

    In the evening a lot of people like watching TV. But if they go to see a film or go to a concert, they have to go to Manchester, because there are n cinemas in Lofton.

    Like many other villages near towns or cities, it is clean and quiet. So life in Lofton may not be so e as the life in the b cities, but it can be just as interesting. That is w people in Lofton love their village.

    Many of us have ever loved the two toy bears--a brown Teddy bear and yellow Winnie- the- Pooh bear. The two toy bears come from real stories in life.

    In 1902, Theodore Roosevelt, President of the USA, went on hunting. The hunting dogs found an old bear in the forest near Washington D. C. and the guide asked the president to shoot it. But President Roosevelt disagreed. A cartoonist drew a cartoon showing that the president refused to shoot the bear. Soon, the bear began to appear in other newspapers. People named the bear Teddy which was Theodore's nick- name.

    In 1913, a captain named Harry Cole paid 20 dollars for a black bear which was born in the Canadian countryside. The captain's hometown, Winnipeg, was the origin (起源) of the bear s name. In Winnipeg， Winnie served as the mascot(吉祥物). When World War I began, the captain went to France. Winnie was sent to London Zoo which many kids often visited. Because of its lovely look, the bear became popular with children.
