    A penfriend is a friend we have  met but to whom we write letters. Many people have penfriends in different countries. They write and receive letters and sometimes keep their penfriends for many years. Sometimes they meet their penfriends.

    But usually people don't meet their penfriends because they live many miles  each other. Most penfriends are between children living in different countries. They write to one another to  about the way of life in other countries. Sometimes they write so that they can practice on another's language.

    Letters between penfriends are usually  information about the writer's own country, his own town, school, interests and so on. The best place to find a penfriend is in a children's magazine. Most magazines for young people list the names and addresses of children in different countries, who are looking for penfriends.

    What has happened to the forests of the USA in the last 350 years? In 1620, about half the USA was covered by forest. In 1850, about a third was covered by forests. To-day the forests have almost gone. But too many trees are still being cut down in the USA. There are a lot of sand left. China doesn't want to copy the USA's example. So China has built a new Great Wall across the northern part of China. This time, it is a "Great Green Wall" of trees, millions of trees. The Great Green Wall is 7, 000 kilometres long, and between 400 and 1, 700 kilometres wide. The Great Greet Wall will stop the wind from blowing the earth away. It will stop the sand from moving towards the rich farmland in the south. It has already sand. But more "Great Green Wall" are still needed, and not only in China. They must be built all over the world.
