A good friend of mine lives with six hundred wild animals on a Greek island. Ever since he left school (where I first knew him) he has travelled all over the world collecting animals for his very own zoo.

    He hoped to collect two examples of every kind of animal on his island, like Noah before the Great Flood. But the flood that my friend was afraid of, was a flood not of water, but of people. I think you have heard of my friend; he writes books about his travels, and about the wild and wonderful animals that he collects. The money from the books helps to pay for all the food that these animals eat.

    My friend told me that when he was out looking for water last week (there is not enough water on the island, though there is plenty all round it), he found oil. He needs money for his travels, and {or his zoo, and a little oil would buy enough water for all his life; but he knows that if he tells anybody else about it, it will be the end of his zoo, and his life's work. I know my friend, he will not tell anybody (except you and me) about what he found, because oil and water do not mix.

Zoos Do a Good Job

    It is good to keep animals in zoos. I know a lot of people think it is wrong to keep animals in zoos.

    1, I believe that zoos have many good points.

    Firstly, zoos are places for people to see many different 2of animals from all over the world. Without zoos, most people would3see a real bear or tiger.

    Secondly, zoos look after the animals very 4. The animals are always given food and cleaned5 . In the wild, it is not always possible for an animal to find food, so sometimes it goes hungry. But animals kept in zoos never go hungry.

    6, zoos protect the animals they look after. They offer them safe places to live in. In the wild, some kinds of animals are in danger of becoming extinct. Zoos give these animals a chance to live. Without zoos, there would be 7kinds of animals in the world.

    Not many years ago, some farmers were worried because hawks(鹰) were taking many of their chickens. The farmers did not know what to do. Finally they went to the country officials and asked for help.

    "Kill the hawks," the officials said. "We'll even pay you for them. " So the farmers began to think of ways to kill the hawks.

    The farmers killed many hawks. They no longer had to worry about their chickens. But now they had a new worry.  Field mice were eating up a lot of the farmers' grain. Hawks eat not only chickens but also field mice. They eat more field mice than chickens. But the farmers did not know this. When they kill a lot of hawks, they changed the balance of nature.

    When people move into a new place, they often destroy many wild plants.  Often these plants are food for the animals. If the animals cannot find enough plants lo eat, they will starve(饿死) or have to leave the place.

    In one part of the United States, for example, the deer there like to eat a certain kind of wild rose. The mountain lions there eat the deer. The number of deer, mountain lions, and wild roses does not change much if people leave things as they are.

    But people killed many mountain lions to protect the deer.  Soon there were so many deer that they ate up all the wild roses.  Then the deer began to eat leaves of young trees.  These trees were important to the farmers.  So the farmers thought of ways to protect trees. Now the deer had nothing to eat, and many of them died. This was another lesson from nature.

    To keep the balance of nature is important for us to remember.
