Shanghai
has been my home, sweet home for ten years now. I never thought that when I
came here in 2004 from Toronto that I would stay this long, but I fell in love
with the city as soon as my plane landed at Pudong International Airport.
Shanghai
is one of the greatest cities of the world. It is alive and exciting. Here,
everything is new and everything seems possible. When I arrived there were only
three Metro lines (地铁线). Today there are sixteen. Ten years ago, many people still lived
in poor neighbourhoods with houses that did not have bathrooms or even hot
water. Today, most people live much better.
I
enjoy walking down the cool, tree-lined streets of the French Concession (法租界)
during the summer and seeing the old, Western-style houses. Many street vendors
(小贩) have gone, but you can still buy some delicious
street food in places. Near Shanghai Indoor Stadium (体育馆), in winter, there is always someone selling hot sweet potatoes
baked in a barrel (桶). It's a great snack on a cold
day.
But
what I like most about Shanghai is the people. People in Shanghai are friendly
and talkative. They're also not afraid to try something new which is why
fashion is so popular here. From unusual hairstyles to colourful clothes,
people in Shanghai like to dress up and stand out in the crowd.
With
its mixture of old and new, with its brightness and charm, I am proud to call
Shanghai my home, sweet home.
