    Help kids learn and grow. Be a big brother or big sister at an after-school care center. You can help little kids to learn or play with them.

    Give back during the holidays. Serve dinner to the homeless or volunteer at your local old people's home. Your local church and temple may also need your help.

Help at a local animal shelter(动物收容所). Most shelters depend on volunteers to keep the cats and dogs happy and well exercised. And when you’re walking dogs, you get some exercise, too.

    Protect the environment. Take part in a local park clean-up day. Plant a tree in the spring. Join a group to work together to protect your local river.

    Help sick people. Lots of us are close to people who have a medical problem. It can make you feel good to donate your time or money to the people with an illness. When you cheer them up, you also feel happy.

    It was a hot day. Everybody wanted (get) cool, so an ice cream store was popular.

    A little girl (hold) her money in her hand and went into the store. But the shop (assist) told her to read the sign on the door. The girl couldn't go into the store unless she put on shoes. The little girl left (slow), and a big man followed her out of the store.

    He watched the girl quietly when she stood in front of the store and read the sign, said "No Bare Feet”. She turned and started to walk away with tears her eyes. Just then, the big man called her. He took off his shoes put them in front of the girl. “If you walk with them, you can get your ice cream.” he said.

    Then he helped the girl put her (foot) into the shoes. He said, “I get (tire) of walking around, and it'll be good to just sit here and eat ice cream.” The little girl was happy. She ran into the store and ordered her ice cream.

— Well, I suggest they have a rest. If they have a good rest, I think they can work better.

    A lesson in “heart” is my little 10-year-old daughter, Sarah, who was born with a muscle(肌肉)missing in her foot and wears a brace all the time. She came home on a beautiful spring day to tell me she had competed in “field day” 一 that's where they have lots of races and other competitive events.

    Because of her leg support, my mind raced as I tried to think of words of encouragement for my Sarah, things I could say to her about not letting this get her down-things I have heard many famous coaches tell the players when they were faced with defeat(失败)—but before I could get a word out, she looked up and said, “Daddy, I won two of the races.”

    I couldn't believe it! Then Sarah said. “I had an advantage.”

    Ah. I knew it. I thought she must have been given a head start……some kind of physical advantage. But again, before I could say anything, she said, “Daddy, I didn't get a head start…My advantage was I had to try harder!”

        On a rainy day, about 150 volunteers worked for eight hours to clean up Carson Creek that is near a river. About nine tons of trash (垃圾) was taken out from there.

         "We did a good job," said Alan Specter, the organizer of the event. "We've planned to come back here one more time, three years from now. Of course, we hope that there won't be so much trash next time."

         The trash came in all shapes, sizes and colors: bottles, bicycles, batteries, furniture, clothing, plastic bags, dolls and even a golf bag with a full set of golf clubs (高尔夫球杆).  

         The dirty and tiring work was done by two volunteering groups - Save the Bay and Watch the Whales. Most of the volunteers came from a local police station and a fire station. And some of them were old people who had already got retired.

         That day, it rained a little. All of them wore boots and raincoats. The work took place along a two-mile river with over 500 big yellow trash bags everywhere.

         No one found anything that cost much. A five-year-old boy found an earring which he thought might be worth a million dollars. He said he'd sell it. Then he'd donate half of the money to Watch the Whales, and use the other half to buy his favourite ice cream every day.

         Many people laughed at the boy's story. However, it was easily found that the environment there did become better.

    Teenagers who listen to the same music often have a common look. One hot style in music and fashion is hip-hop. Hip-hop is a type of urban music with a heavy beat. Typical (典型的) hip-hop fashions are loose-fitting street clothes. The style includes baggy (宽松的) pants, sweatshirts, hiking boots, baseball caps (usually worn backward), jackets with sports logos, and expensive athletic shoes. In the hip-hop style, boys and girls often dress the same way.

    African-American kids in Detroit and Chicago first made hip-hop fashions trendy (时髦的) more than 20 years ago. They wore baggy street clothes to dance clubs. Then North American and European bands also began wearing like this. Thanks to the popularity of music videos and movies, hip-hop soon became an international fashion.

   Teens around the world, from Britain to South Africa to Japan, now wear hip-hop clothing. Seventeen- year- old Melanie Borrow, of Manchester, England, said, "My pride and joy in life are my Levi's jeans." In the United States, teens spend a lot of money on hip-hop fashions. David Bowen, 17, of Evanston, Illinois, has five pairs of hiking boots, each costing around $ 100. David said, "They are popular because a lot of hip-hop performers wear them."
