Once upon a time, there was a small town. And there was a cave near the town. People called 1the "Cave of Fear". Many people had explored into the cave 2no one had ever returned from there. So people lived in terror. They were afraid 3 the monster would leave the cave one day. Since then, no one went to the cave any more.

Many years 4 , a young man came to the town one day. He heard  5 the situation of the cave, he decided to enter the cave and  6 the monster. The young man wanted 7 person to go with him, but everyone was  8 afraid that a single person got near the mouth of the cave with him.

The young man never gave up. He went inside the cave alone. Suddenly, he felt something hit him  9 on the back. This pushed him forward towards a hole in the rock. He 10 avoid it, and fell through. He thought he was about to 11.

However, as he fell, he heard music, and voices. They got 12 when he reached closer to the bottom of the cave. He heard a group of people shout, “Surprise!”

It was 13 big party! The partygoers were all those people14 had never returned to the town. They explained to him that this place had been the idea of an old mayor of the town. That mayor had tried to do 15 great things, but was always held back by the fears of the people around him. So he created the story of the monster. He wanted to tell people that fear would stop your way to exploration.

Li Shizhen (李时珍) was one of the most famous doctors in Chinese history.  He was born in Qichun, Hubei in 1518.

Both of Li Shizhen's father and grandfather were doctors.  Li Shizhen's grandfather was a country doctor who traveled in the countryside with a bag of herbs (药草) and medications and cured (治愈) people. His father was doctor who wrote several books.

Li Shizhen used to help his father in his medical practice when he was young.  Li Shizhen's father wanted him to enter politics (从政). Li Shizhen studied for the exams and passed the country-level examination, but he was never able to pass the imperial (帝国的) examination.

When he was 38, he cured the son of the Prince of Chu and was invited to be an official in that court (宫廷) A few years later, he became an official at the Imperial Medical Institute.

Even though he fulfilled his father's dream, he didn't want to continue working for the court.

One year later, he left the court and returned to be a doctor again.

Li Shizhen. was famous for his book, Compendium of Materia Medica 《本草纲日 》). He spent 27 years writing the book. Unluckily, Li Shizhen died before the book was officially published. It is such a successful book.  Now it is still one of the most important medical books in China.

Once upon a time there was a little cook. Her name was Caroline and she lived in a town. She was very cute and beautiful. Her eyes were as1 as the stars. Her lips were so pink that even the roses were interested by them. In the town, there was a king 2was always sad and easy to get angry. He did not have 3 cook in his palace because of his strange character. So he could only eat junk food while Caroline cooked nice meals for the poor kids in town.

One day, Caroline had4 great idea. She decided to go to the palace 5 to the king. When she rang the doorbell, the king opened the door 6. Caroline took a deep breath and asked the king with a nervous smile," Can….Can I use your huge kitchen to cook meals7 kids?"

The king thought for a second. Then he agreed to let Caroline8 his kitchen for two hours. Caroline jumped for joy at once. She picked9 vegetables from her family's vegetables garden. Then she 10 all of them to the palace.

After a while, the king smelt the smell of cooking11 from the kitchen. So he wanted to go in to see 12 Caroline cooked food. 13Caroline saw him, she asked him to taste the food that she was cooking. 14 delicious food it was!

From that day on, the people in that town had a happy king. They15to the parties in the palace. And the king shared his big table full of delicious food with the poor.

Though it is small, the pen has changed the history, improved the trade of countries, recorded events, carried news, and done far more work for human beings than all other tools.

Progress without it would have been almost impossible. The invention of the wheels, the introduction of steam engine(蒸汽机), the use of electricity, all these have changed the lives of millions of people, but the pen has done more. It has taken away mountains, and it has prepared the way for all progress and development of the society.

In the past the pen did all the work if you wanted to keep any writing for some time. The lawyers took up their pens and wrote the law of the country from the days when papyrus(纸莎草纸) was first used. The most famous letters in the world were written with a pen. It was with a pen that the greatest thinkers of all time wrote down their thoughts.

The pen is very utilitarian. We cannot sign a bill or write a letter or buy a house without our pen. An agreement is worthless till our name is written with a pen. The writers encourage the world with it. The students take their examinations with it as well.

Our coming into the world is recorded with a pen. Before we have been at school, our name is written on the name list with a pen. We cannot be married till we have signed. A pen records the important events in our life.

Let us remember that we hold in our hand the most powerful instrument which man owns. The pen is a magic tool. Whenever you use it, enjoy it.
