At first, some students just 3 to the other students. I was one of them. I was afraid to speak English. I thought someone would 4 me, but I wanted to speak. I always spoke English in my heart. My teacher went on saying, "Don't be afraid. Open your mouth.

    I tried and tried to open my mouth. At last, I said "Hello!" to the teacher.

    A group of old classmates, who have succeeded in their work, got together to visit their old university professor. The conversation soon turned to complaining about the stress in work and life. To offer his guests coffee the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and many cups—china(瓷), plastic and glass, some plain(朴素的) looking, some expensive and some lovely. The professor told them to help themselves to the coffee.

    When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said "Can you notice all the nice—looking expensive cups: were taken, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones? While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source(根源) of your problems and stress."

    "What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you went for the best cups and were eyeing each other's cups."

    "Now think about this: life is the coffee, and the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain life and do not change the quality of life. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cups, we fail to enjoy the coffee. So don t let the cups drive you, enjoy the coffee instead."

    Jack worked hard but he was always shy before his classmates. So he had few friends at school. A new student, Peter, got to the class. Other students got on well with him soon except Jack.

    One day, some boys put some money in Jack's bag and one of them pretended (假装)to have lost the money. Of course, someone found the money in Jack's bag at last. It was worse that Jack felt sad but he could say nothing about it. Soon people called him a thief and his classmates laughed at him in the school. His teacher asked his parents to the school too. Just then, Peter stood out and supported(支持) Jack a lot. And with his help, everything was clear at last.

Jack to take part in many activities and Jack became active little by little. His parents were very glad to see that. Now Jack has more friends.

    Some people learn a second language easily. Other people have trouble learning a new language. How can you help yourself learn a new language such as English? There are several ways to make learning English a little easier and more interesting.

    The first step is to feel positive(积极的) about learning English. If you believe that you can learn, you will learn. Be patient. You do not have to understand everything all at once. It is natural to make mistakes when you learn something new. We can learn from our mistakes. In other words, do not worry about taking risks.

    The second step is to practise your English. For example, write a journal, or a diary every day. You will get used to writing in English, and you will feel comfortable expressing your ideas in English. After several weeks, you will see that your writing is improving. In addition, you must speak English every day. You can practise with your classmates out of class.

    You will make mistakes, but gradually you will become comfortable to communicate in English.

    The third step is to keep a record of your language learning. You can write this in your journal. After each class, think about what you did. Did you answer a question correctly? Did you understand anything the teacher explained? Perhaps the lesson was difficult, but you tried to understand it. Write these accomplishments in your journal.
