In the nineteenth century football began to be played in English public schools. The public schools were actually very expensive private(私立的) schools attended by the sons of the rich and powerful.

    The headmasters (校长) of three schools--Rugby, Eton and Harrow--began to develop new versions of football. The game became less violent (激烈的), less dangerous and easier to control（控制). It became a game for young gentlemen.

    Each public school divided its pupils into clubs or "houses". The houses played football matches against each other, with each house wearing a particular(特定的) colour.

    The first football clubs were organized(组织) in the same way as the house teams. Later the house competitions were used as a model(模型，模范) for the FA Cup(the Football Association Challenge Cup(英格兰足球杯).

    Many of the boys at the public schools went on to the two English universities, Oxford and Cambridge. Football was very popular at Cambridge, but the young men from the different schools played with different rules. In 1848 a set of Cambridge Rules were established(制定) for everyone to play under. Some of these rules now seem a little strange.

    In the United States, headmasters and teachers discipline(惩戒) students in several ways. The teacher often writes or  the student's parents. Sometimes students have to stay at for an extra hour. If a student behaves , the headmaster can suspend (勒令…休学) the student. The student cannot come to school for one, two, or three days, Sometimes, when the headmaster suspends some students, they are . "A three-day vacation!" they thought.

    Mr Lazares, a headmaster, didn't like to suspend students. When the boy who was not behaving well in class was sent to his , Mr Lazares telephoned the boy's parents. "If you come to school with your son, I won't  him having classes," he said. The boy's father came to school and went with his son to every . Other students stared at the boy and his father. The boy was embarrassed. After that, he behaved better.  He didn't want his father to come to school . Other students behaved better, too. They thought, "I don't want my to come to school!"

    That year, about 60 parents came to school with children who didn't behave well. The next year, parents had to come to school. The students were behaving better.

    Which university would you like to go to in the future? It's not too early to think about it right now.

    Students at Hilltop School had a University Week at the end of last month.  For instance, they designed a flag for a virtual(虚拟的) "University of Hilltop".

    He said he started the program to help students form their aims.  "University may not be for everyone, but we want the program to help students form their aims." He said.

     Eric, a student in Grade 8, said, "University Week made me realize that university is only four years away. I should do research about where I want to go. "Paul, another student in Grade 8 said that he realized there were so many universities for him to choose.

    The school also invited people to give career talks. The first talk was given by Captain Brown, a policeman. He talked about how to choose a career way.

    "The program opened up the students' eyes." Said Mr Miller.

A. According to the students, the program worked well.

    It is true that people with better education are usually able to get better paying jobs. In other words, they have more chances to choose a good job while people with little or no education don't. It seems that the purpose of education is to make people get jobs. But this isn't accepted by all people.

    Some people may think that a person should spend the best years of his life to get education only for a way of living. This was probably one of the earliest reasons of education. In fact, if education is just a way of making a living, people don't need to spend so much time in school. People can get education for a living in a short time. Subjects like history and geography need not be taught to everyone. Even language and mathematics need not be taught in detail(详细地), either. Here it is clear that education is much more than teaching a man to get a way of living.

    Education is well-rounded and it is mainly for improving a man. It is not only to teach him to speak, read and write, but also to develop his creative thinking and other abilities. After that, it is to make him a wise man and thankfully enjoy the achievements of human. Education is to make a man lead a better life. Educated people are expected to be able to listen to good music, read good books, watch plays and most of all take an interest in the world.

    I would agree that making a good living is an important reason for education, but certainly not the most important or the main reason.
