Charles Dickens was one of the greatest
English writers. His books are still popular today. Dickens was born in a poor
family. He had little schooling (学校教育) when he was a child. He worked in a factory from morning to night,
with little food to eat and only a small place to live in. When he was twelve,
his father was put into prison for debt (因债入狱).
Dickens' first important job was as a
newspaper reporter. When he worked there, he wrote his first storybook, The
Pickwick Papers. It was a great success. Oliver Twist, his second storybook,
was also successful. He became very famous for his storybooks. Dickens wrote
many books. He worked very hard and it was bad for his health. In 1870, he died
when he was at work.
