Ruth and her husband owned a restaurant called the Toll House. As manager and cook, Ruth kept very busy. One day in 1930, she was making some chocolate butter cookies．It was required that she should melt chocolate into the dough (面团)．However, she found that she had run out of baker's chocolate. They were named Toll House cookies after Ruth's restaurant and are the most popular cookies in America today. About seven billion chocolate chip cookies are eaten every year, and nearly half the cookies baked in American homes are chocolate chip cookies.
