  • 9. 课文大变脸(语法填空)

I'm enjoying myself on my student exchange program in France. You wouldn't believe how (quick) my French has improved because of the host family's help. I'm very comfortable (speak) French now.

My biggest challenge is learning how (behave) at the dinner table. Things are very from the way they are at home. For example, you're supposed to put your bread on the table instead of on your plate! I thought that was pretty strange at first, now I'm used to it. Another example is you shouldn't eat anything with your hands bread, not even fruit. You have to cut it up and eat it with fork. It's impolite to say you're full. If you don't want any more food, you should just say, "That was delicious."

Also, you're not supposed to put (you) elbows on the table. I have to say that I find difficult to remember everything, but I'm gradually (get) used to it. I'll write again soon and tell you (much) about my life in France. Hope you're having a good school year.

    Yours

    Lin Yue

  • 10. 阅读表达

Learning the language of a country isn't enough. If you want to have a pleasant visit, find out as much as possible about the manners and customs of your host country. You will probably be surprised at how different they can be from your own.

A visitor to India should remember that people there consider it impolite to use the left hand for passing food at table. The left hand is supposed to be used for washing oneself. Also in India, you might see a man shaking his head at another to show that he doesn't agree. But in many parts of India a shake of the head means agreement. Nodding your head when you are given a drink in Bulgaria will most probably leave you thirsty. In that country, you shake your head to mean "yes"—a nod means "no".

At a meal in countries on the Arabian Peninsula(阿拉伯半岛), you will find that your glass is repeatedly refilled(反复回添) as soon as you drink up. If you think you have had enough, your should take the glass in your hand and give it a little shake from side to side or place your hand over the top.

In Europe, it's quite common to cross your legs when you talk to someone even at an important meeting. Doing this in Thailand, however, could bring about trouble. Also you should try to avoid touching the head of an adult- -it's just not done in Thailand.
