    Long ago, people happened (偶然) to see their faces in ponds (池塘) and lakes. Some people were frightened. "That must be my soul (灵魂)," a person would say.

    The first mirrors were made of shiny metal (发光的金属). Later, people used glass mirrors. They were careful not to break them. Breaking a mirror could harm (伤害) the soul. That is how a broken mirror came to mean (意味着) bad luck. The bad luck is supposed to last for (持续) seven years.
