    Mary is a little girl. She is only four. She is not at school. She doesn't know how to read or write. But her sister Joan is a schoolgirl. She is ten years old. She knows how to read and write.

    One day, Joan sees her little sister in the room. She is at the table. She has a pencil in her hand. She is writing." What are you writing, Mary?" She asks. "I'm writing a letter to my friend Rose."

    "But how can you? You don't know how to write," says her sister.

    "Well." says Mary, "It doesn't matter. Rose doesn't know how to read."

    On a sunny spring day, Dad, Mom, Jack and Emily are in the car. They are going to have a picnic. They stop by the lake.

    Look! The children put on their hats and play ball. But the wind blows Emily's hat away. Dad is fishing. He wants to catch a big fish in the lake. But he catches Emily's hat. He gives the hat to Emily.

Then they are all hungry.

    Mom takes the picnic basket from the car and the other three help put the food on the picnic blanket. They have cheeseburgers, apples and orange juice. What a nice day!

    On summer holiday I am in the forest by myself (我自己), I go down to fish in the river. Soon get a big fish. Then I hear a great noise. There, right behind me, sits a big black bear! Wild animals are afraid of any quick move. So I move very slowly. The bear watches me. But he sits still. I take the fish and throw it to him. He eats it at once.

    Now what am I going to do? I'd better go on fishing, I think. The bear thinks so, too. Soon I gets another fish. I go over to him and put the fish into his big red mouth. I fish and fish—all for him. At first I am afraid to stop. Then I begin to like doing it. He is so friendly.

    When evening comes, the bear stands up and turns away (转身离开) from me. I can take some fish for my dinner.
